Unless you DIY, you'll probably pay more than that to have it installed (especially considering it will need an electrical connection.

@swreynolds, this is definitely something you would DIY - the picture here (and the fact that they are calling it a valve) make it seem like this is an actual replacement valve, but it's actually a motorized arm that you strap to the pipe, which then remotely actuates the existing valve lever. So, no pipe modification needed, it just attaches to what you already have.

If you're that worried about a leaking pipe then just turn it off before you leave.

So it only works if your pipe already has the appropriate type of shutoff valve. Mine has a multi-turn gate valve, so no dice!

Super cheap and it integrates with SmartThings. My insurance will also give me a discount if I install water leak sensors next to the washers/sinks/tubs. Score!

this is a smart valve, you can add sensors so the water shuts off automatically if the dishwasher or washing machine starts leaking. Going in the basement and turning off the water every time you leave the house doesn't sound like a solution, unless you're trying to get exercise.

I assume this requires a SmartHome hub and leak sensors in every location water could leak or pipes could burst....?

It does require a hub, but while a true smart system will use sensors to turn this off, you should be able to just toggle it from within the app. Depending on where your water shutoff is, especially if its in a difficult to access location this can be way quicker, but will be best if it shuts off based on leak detection.

If you have water usage data too, say from a pulse counter on the water meter, you could say "if water use runs continuously for more than half an hour, shut off", which wouldn't trigger on things like showers, but should notice a leak before it ruins too much of the house.
